25 Years of NordicNeuroLab: From research to clinical impact

This year, NordicNeuroLab proudly marks its 25th anniversary – a milestone reflecting our evolution from a small, research-driven initiative in Bergen to an established global contributor in functional MR imaging. For more than two decades, we have developed products and solutions that both support the field of fMRI and contribute to its continued advancement.

For us, this anniversary represents more than a measure of time. It speaks to 25 years of close collaboration with clinicians, researchers, and industry partners, guided by a shared objective: to enhance the use of functional brain imaging is used in both research and clinical settings. Through these efforts, we have contributed to advancing the understanding of the human brain and to enabling more precise, informed, and patient-centered care worldwide.

From research to global reach

NordicNeuroLab was founded in 2001, emerging from early fMRI research in Bergen where simple tools, such as a strobe light and a mirror mounted on the head coil, were used to stimulate and study brain activity during scanning. What began as a practical solution to meet the needs of research environments quickly revealed a broader opportunity: to make functional imaging more accessible, reliable, and clinically relevant.

Since then, the field has evolved significantly and so have we. Today, our solutions are installed in more than 2,000 sites across over 70 countries. This global presence is supported by long-standing partnerships with leading MR scanner manufacturers, allowing our products to integrate seamlessly into clinical workflows around the world.

A clear purpose

Our growth reflects a consistent ambition: to help move functional imaging beyond specialized research settings and support its use as a practical clinical tool, alongside structural imaging, in everyday healthcare.

At the heart of our work lies a simple idea:

Our vision:

All patients benefit from complete imaging information for optimized treatment.

Our mission:

Apply world-leading competence and experience to provide professional solutions for functional imaging enabling improved patientcare and clinical efficiency.

In practice, this translates into developing tools that help clinicians better interpret brain function during critical decision-making. By enabling more complete and usable functional imaging data, we support healthcare professionals in understanding individual patients in greater detail – and in tailoring treatment approaches accordingly. This is particularly important in areas such as neurosurgery planning and psychiatric and cognitive research.

A journey of continuous innovation

Over the years, NordicNeuroLab has introduced a range of solutions that have helped shape and support the development of functional imaging workflows:

o  Early innovations such as the SyncBox improved timing precision between stimulus presentation and data acquisition, helping standardize fMRI paradigms in research and clinical settings

o  Software platforms such as nordicMEDiVA have expanded capabilities for image analysis, post-processing, and clinical interpretation of functional data

o  Integrated hardware and software solutions, including fMRI Essentials and nordicAktiva, reflect an ongoing effort to improve usability, workflow efficiency, and clinical adoption of fMRI techniques

o  In parallel, patient-centered solutions have contributed to better comfort and engagement during MR examinations, supporting higher data quality and improve scanning conditions

Across these developments runs a common thread: focusing on practical solutions that bridge the gap between complex imaging technology and everyday clinical use.

Looking ahead

As we mark 25 years of progress, our journey mirrors a broader shift in healthcare- from static imaging to dynamic understanding, and from standardized treatments to more personalized care.

Functional imaging plays a pivotal role in this evolution. By enabling clinicians and researchers to observe brain activity in real time,we support more informed decision-making and improved clinical outcomes.

At its core, our work is driven by a commitment to advancing how we understand the brain – and translating that knowledge into better care for every individual behind each scan.
